Conversion to Islam

Guided Kalema ceremony with a registered Alim and Conversion Certificate issued on completion.

This service does not promote, persuade, compel, force, or invite anyone to convert to Islam. It exists solely to assist those who have already made this personal decision, and to make the process as dignified and straightforward as possible for them.

About this service

ShiaJamaat provides a supported, dignified process for individuals who have chosen to embrace Islam. The Kalema ceremony — the formal declaration of faith — is conducted by a registered Shia Alim, and a Conversion Certificate is issued upon completion.

ShiaJamaat can also arrange the Kalema ceremony prior to a Nikaah, for those whose spouse is converting to Islam before their marriage ceremony.

Eligibility

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • The decision to convert must be made freely and of your own accord.

The ceremony

The Kalema ceremony involves the individual reciting the Shahada — the declaration of faith — in the presence of a registered Shia Alim:

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا وَلِيُّ اللَّهِ وَوَصِيُّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَخَلِيفَتُهُ بِلَا فَصْلٍ

Following the ceremony, a Conversion Certificate is issued by ShiaJamaat. This certificate is accepted by Islamic organisations and religious bodies as evidence of the individual's acceptance of Islam.

Before the ceremony

There is no formal knowledge test required for the conversion ceremony itself. However, we encourage anyone considering conversion to seek learning and understanding of the faith beforehand. If you would like to speak with an Alim before your ceremony, please mention this in your application and we will arrange it.

ShiaJamaat requires applicants to be at least 18 years of age. Those under 18 should seek guidance from a trusted family member, guardian, or community leader.

The ceremony itself is brief — typically 15 to 30 minutes. Please allow additional time for document verification and any preparatory discussion with the Alim.
